Panama December 13, 1944

The weather on this day was like every other day in Panama;
tropical climate with a high relative humidity.
Therefor Panama has among pilots a bad reputation
for its fast changing bad Wx.

On this day three P-39 Q Airacobra A/C left France Field, Panama,
for a rec. mission.
Due to the bad Wx, Flight 880 got separated from the leader
and was not to been seen, until it was found in 1991.

Locals, hunting for wild game, stumbled across a crashed A/C with weapons in the jungle.
They contacted the local police, who met the U.S. Army and CIL-HI team and brought
them to the wreck of the A/C.

The unit knew it was a P-39 Q Airacobra at once. The tail no. 42-80880 was clear.
Over the course of about 8 days the CIL-HI team
( U.S. Army’s Central Identification Laboratory, Hawaii )
records and cleared the site from ammo.
The A/C is still at the crash site
and the EOD exploded the ammunition at the site.

Unfortunately, the body of 2Lt. Maxon was not found.

The Operation was called "Operation Jungle Jewel".

The team believed that 2LT Maxon went down with the A/C and died.

2LT Warren Maxon was born in Jewell, Iowa, on July 10, 1924.
He was 21 years old when he crashed in the Panamanian Jungle.
